AIM: rejuvenate existing playground space and design a larger playground area, appropriate for primary school age children.
PURPOSE: the equipment and space in the playground will enable an educational, enjoyable, stimulating and safe, outdoor learning experience, primarily for the TOSHC children attending before-school, after-school and vacation care TOSHC sessions.
CAMPUS: lower campus.
ADDRESS: 105 Sylvan Road, Toowong QLD 4066.
LOCATION: existing area between the original Pre-School (old TOSHC) building and the new TOSHC building.
PROJECT MANAGER: Department of Education, Education Queensland in association with Toowong State School and the Toowong State School Parents and Citizens Association (P&C).
BUDGET: guesstimate $100K - $150K
COMPLETION: guesstimate September 2021 (school holidays)
Ideas - October 2020
Thanks to the parents who volunteered their Sunday afternoon time to meet and discuss the outdoor play space between the old Pre-School building and the new TOSHC building. Examples of some of the ideas are below.
Climbing hill and crawling tunnel
A basic hill and pipe tunnel for kids to climb over and crawl through. The photograph includes additional orange playground equipment that would not be used with the basic hill and tunnel suggestion.A simpler tunnel and hill design. We would probably only have room for one tunnel in the designated area.
Sandstone blocks to border sandpit
Border the existing sandpit with large sandstone blocks. The large blocks would be stacked one-two-three blocks high to create a climbing stairs experience.
Personal plaque - buy a sandstone block
Offset the cost of the sandstone blocks. Parents and staff in the school community can purchase a sandstone block and permanently mark the block with a personalised metal plaque.
Ideas - January 2021
Thanks to our TOSHC Manager (Tracy) for suggesting the outdoor play area ideas below. Most of the examples are from The Tradie Ladies (Mel & Bex). View more examples on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/thetradieladiesconstructionanddesign/.

Tyre garden beds
Oldie but a goodie. Reuse discarded tyres to create garden beds. Designed and constructed by The Tradie Ladies.
Venerable vegetable garden
The primary (upper) campus has large garden beds in the "sunken oval" area next ot the school hall. Consultation with Dom Filewood, the original architect of the beds, confirms the garden beds cannot be relocated to the lower campus. The time, energy, labour and cost would be too high. It will be easier, quicker and cheaper to construct new gerden beds on the lower oval.

Ideas - February 2021
Thanks to our P&C Manager (Mel) and the Principal (Brendon) and parent Meg Cridland for suggesting the outdoor play area ideas below.
Giant Chess
Example of a "giant Chess" set. Technically it is a large Chess set. There are even bigger (giant) outdoor chess sets.
Giant Checkers
Example of an outdoor or giant "Checkers" set.
Sitting/Waiting Area
Brendon and Meg suggested similar ideas. Area for mother's to sit with their babies or an area for parents to sit and wait while they pick up their children from TOSHC.
